Stars and Stripes, a U.S. military publication, says that AMVETS is supporting legislation that would allow soldiers to take service dogs to VA hospitals. AMVETS is an organization that helps American war veterans get health care and jobs.
According to Stars and Stripes, the proposed law was drafted by Rep. John Carter, R-Texas. The congressman has named it the Veterans Equal Treatment for Service Dogs Act.
VetsFirst, a program from the United Spinal Association, is also supporting the law. In a recent statement, VetsFirst said: “The VA recently issued a directive that if properly implemented could address service dog access. The legislative solution, however, will ensure equality in access that veterans deserve.”
